Quarry improves sandstone product quality with screen
Boorowa, NSW
Capital Quarries introduced a FlipScreen screening bucket to refine sandstone and gravel directly at the quarry face. By screening material during loading operations, operators were able to remove unwanted fines and debris before stockpiling. The result was a cleaner, more consistent aggregate product while reducing rehandling and improving overall production efficiency.
Capital Quarries
At Capital Quarries near Boorowa, sandstone extraction produces a range of material sizes from large rock fragments to fine dust. While much of this material is suitable for aggregate production, inconsistent particle sizes and excess fines can affect the quality of finished products. Traditionally the quarry relied on fixed processing equipment further down the production chain to separate these materials. However, this meant unsuitable material was sometimes moved and stockpiled before being screened, increasing handling time and reducing operational efficiency. The quarry team wanted a way to manage material sizing earlier in the process to improve product consistency and reduce unnecessary rehandling.
Challenge
To address this, Capital Quarries began using a FlipScreen E80 screening bucket mounted to one of its loaders working at the quarry face. As sandstone and gravel were loaded, the material was screened through the rotating drum before being placed into stockpiles. Finer particles fell through the mesh while larger stone fragments remained separated, allowing operators to better control the size of material entering the production stream. With interchangeable screening panels, the team could quickly adjust the sizing depending on the product being prepared.
Solution
Screening material at the point of extraction helped Capital Quarries produce a more consistent aggregate product while reducing unnecessary material handling. By removing excess fines early, the quarry improved the quality of sandstone products heading into further processing or direct sale. Operators also found that managing sizing during loading helped keep stockpiles cleaner and easier to manage. With the FlipScreen integrated into daily quarry operations, the site achieved improved efficiency, better product control and a smoother production workflow across the quarry.
