Landfill reclamation project recovers usable aggregate

Landfill reclamation project recovers usable aggregate

Lonsdale, SA

Stanvac sought a practical method to reclaim usable aggregate buried within mixed landfill material. By deploying a FlipScreen screening bucket, operators processed excavated waste immediately at the source. Recovered aggregates were separated onsite, cutting haulage and disposal costs while reducing reliance on imported materials and improving project efficiency.

Stanvac

Stanvac regularly encountered large stockpiles of landfill material containing significant quantities of recoverable aggregate mixed with soil, debris and general waste. Historically, much of this material was treated as unusable and either transported offsite for processing or sent directly to landfill disposal areas. This process generated unnecessary freight expenses, additional equipment handling and extended project timelines. Importing replacement aggregates also increased costs and environmental impact. Stanvac required a screening solution capable of separating reusable material immediately where excavation occurred. The equipment needed to be highly mobile, durable enough to handle abrasive landfill conditions and adaptable to varying product specifications through quick screen changes.

Challenge

Stanvac introduced a FlipScreen WL130 screening bucket to its excavation fleet, allowing operators to screen landfill material as it was dug from the ground. The bucket processed mixed waste directly within the work zone, separating usable aggregates from oversize waste in a single step. Interchangeable screening meshes allowed operators to adjust output sizes to match project requirements. Because the FlipScreen mounts directly onto existing machinery, it could be moved quickly between machines or relocated across the site without downtime. This flexible approach eliminated the need for fixed screening plants and reduced the complexity of material handling operations.

Solution

The FlipScreen implementation allowed Stanvac to convert previously discarded landfill material into a valuable reusable resource. Aggregates were screened directly onsite and reused within the project or stockpiled for future use. This significantly reduced tipping fees, trucking costs and the need to purchase imported materials. Operators also benefited from simplified workflows, as screening could occur exactly where excavation was taking place. Productivity increased while site logistics became easier to manage. The project demonstrated how mobile screening attachments can unlock hidden value within landfill environments while delivering measurable cost savings and environmental benefits.

Result
